Ontario legislature passes Jamaican Independence Day resolution

The Legislative Assembly of Ontario unanimously passed a resolution brought by a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) to recognize August 6, each year, as Jamaican Independence Day throughout the Canadian province.

2012 will mark Jamaica’s 50 anniversary of independence, and the community
in Canada has started plans to commemorate this landmark event. The planning
committee ledby Co-Chairs Joe Halstead and Pamela Appelt, includes Canadians
of Jamaican heritage, the Jamaican Diaspora, and friends of Jamaica, who will guide
various initiatives to commemorate and celebrate the event in Canada and Jamaica.
